There is a revolutionary product that is taking the decking world by storm and that product is Ecodek. This is a man made material that lends itself perfectly to the use in decking as opposed to the more traditional materials such as hardwood.

The reason being is that Ecodek requires more or less no maintainance which means that there is none of the usual warping and splitting which is the main problem with decking. As a case in point, Ecodek is now being used at the Tropical bird house at London zoo. Due to the extremes in temperature, the zoo was looking for something that would be able to cope admirably with this and the only answer was Ecodek.

So, if its good enough for London zoo it can surely stand up to the climate in a typical garden so as you can see, it really is the ideal solution for decking. There have been many television appearances for this new material as it is now becoming more widely recognised as something that really is a viable alternative to wood in situations where decking is exposed to the elements.

It is extremely environmentally friendly and comes in different colours to meet different requirements, even bespoke colours can be arranged if the standard offering of colours is not required.

This material can be cut and sanded in exactly the same way as normal wood and there is no need to purchase other tools to carry out the tasks. This really is the new age in decking and all of the maintanance that was previously associated with decking can now be completely forgotten. Just a wipe over with a damp cloth is all that is really needed to make this form of decking look as good as new for ever.

Penzai is an ancient Chinese practice of growing small plants in pots. Penzai literally translates to “tray scenery”, but loosely means potted landscape. The practice moved through Asia and eventually into Japan. Bonsai trees, a Japanese pronunciation of Penzai, became popular during the Heian period in 794 to 1185.

They are not meant to serve a purpose beyond art and contemplation. It is a study in balance, restraint and harmony, as they serve no medicinal or culinary purposes. They don’t contribute to larger landscapes either. For this reason, Bonsai is a very narrow practice, focusing on one or two plants.

This is so important in Japan that one of the oldest known living specimens is considered a National Treasure. It is thought to be at least 500 years old. It is on display in the Tokyo Imperial Palace.

They can be made with nearly any material. As long as it is perennial and has woody growth, it can be made into one. It also should branch and remain small in containment with root and crown pruning.

There are some favorites in this form though. These have characteristics that make them visually appealing on the compact scope of these miniature landscapes. These characteristics usually include small leaves or needles. Some favorites include ficus, because it is easy to grow, many of the evergreen trees, because of their unique wood textures and small needles.

Source materials can be found in many different places. Source material is what is used to begin the process. Bonsai are very difficult to start from seed. Most growers don’t want to start from seed either because the ultimate goal is a mature and weathered appearance. It would take many, many years to achieve this, so most growers use source material that is already mature or partially grown.

There are many intricate techniques in forming a tree. Leaf trimming defines the shape and cleans up the trunk. Pruning is usually the first step. It involves cutting off pieces of the plant to make it an appropriate shape. Wiring is used to hold trunks and branches in place. Clamping can be used in place of wiring if the specimen is too tough. Grafting can be used when a new piece of growing foliage is wanted in a place that didn’t have foliage before. Defoliation can be used to make smaller new leaves grow in the place the large old ones were in. Deadwood is yet another technique used. This entails removing the bark from an entire branch to give the look of dead wood.

Bonsai trees are a meditative hobby with deep cultural ties. These beautiful sculptures can bring joy for generations. Any level horticulturalist can take on one of these projects for years or happiness.

An orchid pot truly is the essential container for your beautiful plant. It has special characteristics that allow your orchid to ventilate and drain properly to help you get the most life time out of your plant. On top of that, you can choose an orchid pot that will also proudly display your orchid—an especially important thing to do when it is in full bloom.

So, what makes orchid pots so unique? Orchid pots, unlike many traditional pots, have extra holes in them to allow for water to move through the root system instead of pooling up in it. These extra holes also allow the roots to breathe better and allow air to move through the roots as well. These requirements are especially important for epiphytic orchids whose life is suspended above ground—on rocks, trees, or other plants. Their natural habitat allows for water and air movement so it’s really important to replicate that at home.

There are many different brands of orchid pots available, but lets take a moment to look at the most common types of pots and see which ones will work best for you. The three most common types of orchid pots are basket pots, plastic pots, and terracotta pots.

Basket pots are the original orchid pot way back when people began cultivating orchids in their homes. These pots provide a timeless charm and are great because of their versatility in displaying your orchids. You can place them on the ground, on a table, or, most impressive, hang a collection of them and allow the orchids to cascade out of the basket. I like doing this with Cymbidium orchids.

Basket pots are a great choice for orchids because of their natural ventilation and drainage qualities. They are literally filled with holes! Depending on the type and size of basket you buy and your display orientation, you might need to use a small plastic pot to contain the root system and then place that inside of the basket pot. This will, of course, be determined by your orchid species.

Plastic pots are inexpensive, easy to replace, and durable. There are tons of different plastic molds available so you can pretty much find a plastic pot for whatever orchid you have. They even make some plastic orchid pots up to a meter deep!

Plastic pots also come in different colors and styles depending on your needs. Black is the most common color, but you can also find clay colored pots that imitate terracotta pots, and clear, transparent pots are also popular. Clear pots are really great because in addition to providing good drainage and ventilation, they also allow sunlight to reach the orchid roots. Many epiphytes enjoy that.

Terracotta pots are also quite common and are great for terrestrial orchids displayed inside or outside. Because they are made of clay they are heavier, but are also very stable. You can buy terracotta pots that have 1 to 5 drainage holes depending on your needs.

Choosing the right pot for your orchid really does matter. If you don’t adequately drain and ventilate your orchid, you can have some bad cases of root rot and mold, which are detrimental to your orchids health. Find a pot that works for the species, presentation, and atmosphere that you’d like to provide your orchid with. Think of it as dressing up your orchid and have some fun with it!

No, I’m not a gardener. Ugh, it feels good just to say it. Here in the northern hemisphere it is time to plant gardens and mow the lawn. Wait until after Mother’s Day, on May 11 was the year of tomatoes and other vegetable plants as hot. Any sooner and can be frozen. But this year the day after Mother’s Day, it was almost freezing at 36 F.

http://www.gardenhosestorage.goodarticlesite.com/garden-tool-organization-101/

Takes away the sin for me to say, I’m not a gardener. Do not get me wrong, I did my part. I loveTaste of fresh vegetables from the garden. When our five girls were at home I woke up Saturday morning was the sun had risen before (I think), so they could help, weeds in the garden work, because I thought it would be to teach them how to do. Let’s be honest, it would be easier to have just done, but we wanted them to have the experience. They are all grown up with a fantastic job ethics, but none of them have a garden.

Organization of gardening canGardening is more fun. Every time you have to look for tools or other things, it takes a bit of fun. Make a space in your garage or shed for gardening tools. Some people refer to areas in the garage and one of these areas would be for gardening tools. Justin Cave, host of the HGTV “Ground Breakers, said:” If it comes in the garden, we seem to be unorganized, myself included. Organize makes you feel better and makes you want to garden. “Personally I’m not so sure, it makes me want to garden, but the same concepts that apply to inside my house my house is outside. Organization I feel better with my city and myself.

Prioritize your needs and time to clean. Get rid of the instruments, handles or Cracking is avoided, because you are not satisfied with it. The adage “you get what is true” pay. The tool can look very cheap for the company, but usually goodare those that are faster and easier to break. It is worth paying for quality.

Susan Appleget Hurst, Better Homes & Gardens senior associate garden editor, recommends three essential tools. A leaf rake, shovel and garden fork. It also recommends, colored handles that are easy in the courtyard on the ground. Have you noticed how many handles are either green or brown? Maybe we could spray a different color on the handle.

Hang tools on garage walls to save space andPrevent inadvertently driving over those who may have leaned against the wall and fell. If hanging is easy to find and seems organized. Hurst recommends a five-gallon bucket with a bag of tools. (She uses the Bucket Boss.) Measuring instruments around the outside of the bucket and go cut grass or weeds in the bucket.

Tubes fit well on a reel. There are many different types of supports for the garden hose and do not use them look betterrolled up instead of lying on the lawn. And they are more protected from the hot sun blaring.

If you have a container with drawers in the garage “small instruments are stored. Label May drawer, so you know where they got the tool after use, so you stay organized. Also keep tools sharp and clean. Wipe dirt or mud with a cloth and at the end of the season, clean the metal tools with linseed oil. Even if you do not like to garden, the meansorganized to be like you. Then you can always find at your neighbors loan

While the needs of different orchid species can vary, it’s relatively easy to determine the quantity and frequency of water that your plants require. There are many factors that affect the amount of water an orchid needs and how quickly it uses the water you provide. Understanding those factors and learning a few tips about how and when you should water orchids will help you get it right.

The amount of water your plants consume at any given time can depend on:

The season – naturally, they’ll drink more water during hot weather.
Their growth phase – an orchid that is experiencing a growth phase after flowering may consume more water because it’s more active.
Your plant’s root system – orchids with pseudobulbs store water.
Pot size – if your plant is too big for the pot it may quickly consume the water you provide.

Novice orchid growers often make basic mistakes when it comes to watering their orchids. Getting it wrong can result in your orchid dying or experiencing very poor health. Here are a few tips that may prevent you from making a fatal error:

Know how quickly your orchid is consuming water. This is simply a matter of monitoring the moisture level in the pot which you can do using your finger.
Ensure that your orchid pot has good drainage. Orchids don’t like to sit in soppy conditions. You should never sit them in a bowl of water so they can drink at their leisure. Doing so can result in rotting roots. An orchid pot should contain a layer of bulky material at the base that facilitates quick drainage of excess water.
Once a week is a good watering frequency for orchids although this may expand to twice a week during summer or the growth phase. If you are watering more often and your plants are quickly drying the pots may be too small for your plants.
When you do water, allow the water to saturate the pot – excess water will drain away if you have the right material in the pot.
Most orchids prefer to almost dry out before you water them again. Plants with pseudobulbs store water so even when the pot is almost dry they are not in immediate danger of going thirsty.
Orchids should be watered in the morning rather than the late afternoon. Watering them too late means that when the cold night air arrives your orchids’ leaves may be still wet.

When it comes to getting this aspect of orchid care right, the most effective tool in your arsenal is your own power of observation. Checking the moisture levels, observing the water consumption rates, and examining the drainage conditions will quickly alert you to any orchid watering mistakes you may be currently making. Don’t worry if you’ve been getting it wrong. Make the necessary changes and you could see a dramatic turn around in their health.

Summer. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year. It’s pretty, bright, and everyone just seems happier when it’s the summer. However, there are a few downsides. One would be sunburn (ouch!) and the other would be your electricity bill. In this heat, it can be deadly to not try and cool down your home. You can do so with fans or air conditioners or a mix of both. You could use the fans, facing in the opposite direction of the air conditioner, to pull the cool air from one room into another to cool down your whole house, if necessary. But the fact of the matter is, staying cool can mean quite a large utility bill. It doesn’t matter if you have a dinky little apartment or a quite sizable house.

However, you can save and be good to the earth too. It’s not nearly as hard as you might think. Here are a few ways that you, average Joe or extraordinary Moe can enjoy green energy savings:

When it comes to green energy savings, the first thing that might come to mind is a tiny little car that can only go thirty four miles per hour. But it isn’t quite like that…

There are also plenty of ways that you can save on your electric bills. One is to unplug all unused appliances in the house and to turn off your A/C and leave your windows open. (If you do this, it is recommended you use a window screen so that you don’t end up with millions of bugs inside your house.) However, there are other options that will lead to less bugs and also to more green energy savings. You won’t even have to turn anything off!

There is a certain type of system that not only reduces your energy usage, but also saves you on your electric bill. Not to mention that the small amount of waste from the system is bio safe and you’re able to dispose of it without affecting the environment.

However, there are a few things that you need to know about these systems.

For one, they work with both single and three phase appliances. This means that pretty much everything from your toaster to your computer to your washer can be more energy efficient. There are two sizes to choose from, both of which are relatively small.

This system also prevents a power surges that can potentially damage your appliances, up to certain amperages. Now, keep in mind that if you have a power surge that exceeds that amperage, you will have some issues. On the other hand, being protected at least partially is better than having ten different surge protectors.

You’re most likely wondering how exactly this system works…well, it’s easy! Pretty much, it saves all of the extra electricity and stores it. Then, instead of having to pull electricity from your company (so to speak), you simply pull it from that little box and voila! The lost electricity is lost no more and neither are your green energy savings!

What are the quickest and easiest ways to propagate your orchids?

Plant division – the quickest way to propagate orchids

You can speed up the propagation process somewhat by dividing orchids like cattleyas. Rule(s) of thumb: the larger the volume of plant divisions (meaning 3-4 growth sections), the more successful the propagation tends to be. In addition, the largest divisions with the most pseudobulbs (the thickened stem which support the leaves of an orchid) will grow the fastest into blooming plants.

5 steps to dividing your orchid to quickly propagate your orchid

Use only sharp, sterile knife or pruners. This way you won’t spread any existing disease and will help to maintain the strength of the divisions.

Cut off any dead or unhealthy leaves. As you’re doing thin, look for the best place to divide the plant. You will often find a natural division point in your orchid; this is great place to cut the root system.

After dividing plant, clean off old medium, dead roots and old leaf sheaths around the bulbs. Leave as many healthy roots as possible. This encourages strong, stable growth in the “new” plant.

Choose a pot for each division that will allow about 2 year’s worth of growth. Lay down a thin layer of potting mix in the bottom of the pot. Make sure you’re using the kind mixture that is best for your orchid. Place it in the pot and add more mixture around the root system.

Lightly tamp down the mixture or stake the plant to ensure its stability and help it quickly establish itself in its new home. Add a name plate with the date you divided the plant for a handy reminder to when you may need to divide it again.

The 4 easiest ways to propagate orchids: use cuttings

If you have an orchid that have back bulbs (older stems that have lost their leaves), cut them off the main plant. Clean them of medium and any dead plant material. Then bury several together in a plastic bag containing 2″ or 5cm of sphagnum moss (or approximately up to a depth of about the bottom ¼ of the bulb). Seal the bag and place it in warm area (approximately 75? F or 24?C) that receives a bright diffused light.

In 2-3 months you’ll begin to see new growth. When the leaves of these new plants are a few inches or centimeters long, place them all in a shallow container with a layer of sphagnum moss on the bottom. Allow them to grow for several months in diffused light. Afterwards transplant each to its own individual pot.

Orchids that have canes or long stems: cut up the canes into pieces (each containing at least two sections of cane where leaves were attached). Half-bury the sections horizontally in shallow dish filled with sphagnum moss. Cover the dish. Place it in a warm area that gets dappled or diffused light. In a few months you’ll see small plants sprouting. At this point you can transplant each to individual pots.

Orchids that produce “babies” along a long, slim stem. After these “babies” develop several mid-sized roots of their own, cut them off the stem and place in each in their individual medium-filled pot. Voila, a new orchid is born!

For orchids that grow tall and have extending roots from the stem. Cut off several inches of the top of the plant that has exposed roots. Place this piece in a pot filled with a good medium mixture. Left alone, the bottom portion of the original plant generally will produce “babies” that can be cut off and planted as described above.

With all the quick and easy ways described above, there really is no need to attempt to propagate orchids from seeds. It is probably the most difficult and slowest way to grow orchids, and only the most patient and avid growers bother to do so. If you really want to grow an orchid from an early, early stage – purchase year-old small plants and start from there. If you’re patient and fortunate, they’ll reward you with blooms in a few years.

Regardless of how you propagate your orchids remember to enjoy the experience as you do with the orchid itself for many years.
