In Persia, to give a red tulip means “ to declare your love” wherein the black center of the flower was said to represent lover’s heart which was burned out of passion. Giving a yellow tulip means to declare your love utterly and hopelessly.

Tulip is regarded as flower of the sun, it faces into the light and closes its petals at dusk. However, this flower not commonly associated with mythological lore unlike others. There was a time that the flower was regarded as a symbol of vanitas for the Dutch when the market for it collapsed and many suffered financial ruin plunging the country into economic depression. It was regarded as a flower that is arrogant, vain, aloof and stiff. It did not find its way into the hearts of poets as it lacks mythological association.
