Irises with their intricate shape, iridescent colors, and upright stems definitely made them great candidates for cut flowers. They can last from for 3-7 days if proper care are given.

It is best to cut iris in the morning or evening rather than in the hot sun when they would be most prone to wilting. They can be cut without damaging the plant since most varieties are either borne without a real stem or on a flower stem that is not an important food producing part of the plant.

If flowers do not have to be transported far, they can be cut in full bloom though fresh blooms that have just opened are the best to pick since they will have longer vase life.

A cool atmosphere will help to prolong its vase life and warmth will encourage the buds to open. If they do not open readily, remove the bracts around the flowers.

Keep the flowers away from excess heat, vegetable, fruits and any wilting flowers. They are also sensitive to ethylene gas.

The stems of the iris dries up easily so frequent re-cutting of stems is advisable. The lower white section that does not take up water easily should be removed.
