Daffodils are grown from bulbs and there are several varieties to choose from. They come in several colors such as yellow, white, cream, orange and pink with flower shapes ranging from small cups, large cups and double blossoms. Daffodils are the first flowers to bloom in spring and one of the easiest and most reliable to grow. So if you want to grow them in your garden here are tips and techniques to consider.

How to choose the daffodil bulbs
When buying daffodil bulbs, make sure you purchase them from reliable garden supply stores. Avoid the discounted ones as they are usually low quality and may not germinate. Choose bulbs that are not dry, lightweight and squishy. They should be fresh, firm and large. Best time to buy them is in the fall just before you are going to plant them. If you will buy them in advance, make sure you store the bulbs in cool and airy place.

Where to plant the daffodil bulbs

Daffodils grow best in areas with ample sunlight preferably all day long. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight as too much shade can lessen the flowering. They should be buried in planting site with well-drained soils, low spots and extra muddy or swampy areas should be avoided. Raised beds and hillsides are the best planting site for daffodils.

How to plant the daffodil bulb
Dig a hole with the depth twice as the daffodils is tall. Meaning if the bulb is 3 inches tall, it should be buried underground six inches deep. Place the bulb with the pointy end up. The bulb should ideally be spaced three to six inches apart though some daffodils can tolerate crowding. Make sure you will loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole to encourage rooting. Set the bulb firmly at the bottom of the hole then give it a gentle twist so it will sit securely upright. You can also sprinkle a little bulb fertilizer in the hole. Return the soil to cover the bulb and water immediately. For longer and better growing season, mulch the area with shredded bark, chopped leaves or pine straw.
